Management of Harley-Davidson Inc. said it has been advised by the two unions representing its Milwaukee-area employees that both proposed labor agreements have been approved in membership votes Monday morning.

“Today’s outcome in Milwaukee is a significant step toward creating the competitive, flexible operations that are essential to the company’s future,” the company said in a statement.

Hourly workers represented by the United Steelworkers Local 2-209 in Milwaukee and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Lodge 78 in Milwaukee, have voted in favor of the agreement, according to the company.

The two unions represent about 1,000 active employees at Harley-Davidson’s powertrain production facility in Menomonee Falls.

The company said it doesn’t expect to have the results of a contract vote by employees in Tomahawk until later in the day. The United Steelworkers Local 460 represents about 275 active employees in Tomahawk.

Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson’s board of directors is scheduled to meet Tuesday for a final review and decision on its Wisconsin production operations, at which time the company said it will provide further information.

Harley-Davidson management has said that approval of the new agreement would be required for the company to keep jobs in the state.

“We thank the union leadership for their hard work in getting to this point and we appreciate the efforts and dedication of all our employees in building Harley-Davidson’s ongoing success as an American manufacturer in a global economy,” the company said in its statement.

Harley-Davidson Inc. and its union leaders have reached a proposed labor agreement that would keep manufacturing operations and about 1,340 jobs in Wisconsin.

The motorcycle company declined Friday to reveal the terms of the proposed contract. Spokesman Bob Klein said it includes “competitive” compensation, and it gives the company the flexibility it needs to remain competitive.

Mike Masik, who represents Harley’s largest union, declined to comment until he could discuss the contract with his members next week.

“My membership will make their choice and they’ll let me know what they want me to do,” said Masik, president of the Milwaukee-area chapter of the United Steelworkers International Union.

Workers are expected to vote on the proposed contract Sept. 13.

Harley has previously said its labor costs in Milwaukee and in Tomahawk, Wis., were too high. The company threatened to move production to Kansas City or another U.S. city if Wisconsin workers wouldn’t agree to concessions.

With an authenticity that could only come from Harley-Davidson, the Cross Bones combines the pure styling of a historic bobber with modern power and technology. Harkening back to a time when returning soldiers stripped parts off their bikes for performance, and sought fat gas tanks to ride across the country, everything about the Cross Bones is true. Starting with the Springer front end, chopped front fender and laced wheels, all the way through the sprung solo seat and deluxe, slash-cut exhaust, the styling inspires thoughts of rugged, empty backroads. The distinctive, authentic look also boasts a smooth ride powered by the 1584 cc, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B engine and 6-Speed Cruise Drive Transmission.

The legendary Fat Boy motorcycle defined the “fat custom” category and imitators everywhere tried to copy its magic. This original continues to turn heads wherever it rolls, with fat tires, fat bars, a fat fender and a big, powerful, black powder-coated, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B™ engine. The Fat Boy model is the very definition of a heavyweight motorcycle, delivering a bold styling statement and a wide, comfortable riding stance. Now, for 2011, this boulevard icon offers a larger readout on the odometer with more information, such as gear and RPM data, plus the new Security Package option with an Anti-lock Braking System and Smart Security System. All this technology works seamlessly into the exquisite styling in a way that only Harley-Davidson can deliver.
